Work Two Full Time Remote Jobs?
The trend is called “Overemployed”, and it’s very popular
This classic post from Hacker News is always worth reading.
Here is another guy working 4 full-time and 1 part time job, earning $1.8 million a year.
The website https://overemployed.com/ is the center of the trend. (I have no connection with them, this is simply commentary on the trend).
This reddit thread is full of people doing it. https://www.reddit.com/r/overemployed/top/
This is new for me too, so here is a rundown of my research:
What jobs to go for?
Jobs that you’re overqualified for - so you can do them quickly and efficiently.
Data Engineering & Software Engineering jobs are best. Data Analysts could do it if they have great time management skills.
What to put on your resume?
Tailor your resume - Leave out experience that makes you look overqualified.
It's okay to omit jobs.. Don’t lie about your experience.
Is it legal? What about non-compete clauses?
Working multiple remote jobs is generally legal but varies by country.
Consult an employment lawyer if you’re worried.
Don’t work for companies that have non-compete clauses (obviously)
Don’t work for competitors or companies in a vendor-client relationship, that’s a recipe for disaster.
What types of companies should you apply to?
Larger companies often require less face time.
Smaller companies or startups might require wearing multiple hats, so assess their work culture carefully.
What to take notice of during the interview process?
Look for signs of micromanagement, like extensive meeting requirements or the constant need to check in.
Phrases like “fast-paced environment,” “wear multiple hats,” or “team player” in job descriptions can signal they want high involvement.
What about interview background checks?
Background checks require your consent and normally verify criminal records, resume accuracy, and credentials. (Again, don’t lie on your resume)
Most checks don’t usually reveal current employment unless a security clearance is involved.
How to handle social media while working multiple jobs?
Consider hibernating your LinkedIn profile, citing a social media cleanse.
Make all social media accounts private, let people know you don’t really use social media.
Take time off Job1 to handle orientation for Job2?
Taking a few days off Job1 can help you adjust to Job2 and make a strong first impression.
Use the time to understand Job2's expectations and norms.
How to handle meeting scheduling/conflicts between jobs?
Block off time on one job’s calendar when you have meetings for the other job.
Develop a strategy to avoid conflicts, such as stating you only turn on your camera when necessary.
